Italy is falling  and I’m riding it upside down

December 1st 2006. ...and by the way (or the shitty game)

And by the way, what about Afghanistan? Our very self-satisfied Foreign minister stated that Italy's military presence in Afghanistan "must be maintained", because after all,"it's not a military mission" (whatever you say, minister).

So Prodi is pulling out of Iraq, but has no intentions to pull out of Afghanistan. They get away with such nonsense because -- like everywhere else -- people here consider the Iraq war the 'wrong' one, and the Afghan war the 'right' one, the one really motivated by terrorism and so on.

Nothing could be farther from the truth. In Afghanistan heroin production is soaring like hell, Talibans are on the rise, Osama is nowhere to be found (and by the way Pakistan and Saudi Arabia are much more involved in international terrorism schemes) and more importantly, conditions of democracy aren't anywhere in sight.
As with Iran, the main reasons for this war seem to be those meant to keep the Russian influence out of the area.

It seems to be that the great game is still on the table, or whatever else we should call it (shitty game?).
I suggest the captivating and exhaustive book by the same name (in Italian, "Il Grande Gioco") to those interested in understanding something of this very very old shitty matter.

I disagree that Italy should pull out of Iraq and I don’t think they should pull out of Afghanistan either. Unfortunately heroin production is at an all time high, and the Taliban prohibited poppy growth (for heroin) but this is not a reason to support them and deprive women, non-Muslims and others of their basic rights.
I don’t agree with your conclusion as to the main reason for these invasions was to keep the Russians out. Perhaps 25 years ago when Russia was communist and there was a cold war going on this analysis would have been dead on, but now Russia is not a military power anymore, not to mention the fact that they were actually invited there by the UN but refused.

Hi J.Doe! How are you doing?
I see that we always disagree about politics…

Even admitting that in Iraq and Afghanistan we brought real democracy and not a rigged one (which I don’t believe), I don’t think we should ‘bring democracy’ with military operations in countries that aren’t even at war with us. And why in the hell the U.S. decided to attack those countries if not for greediness, imperialism, and to favor Israel? If they wanted so much to spread democracy by the use of force they could have picked dozens of other nations and regions.

I understand that the Russians are important because they control resources of natural gas of immense richness, upon which the whole Europe depends right now. Sooner or later they will turn this into a significant political influence, possibly damaging the already enfeebled influence of the U.S. in the area.
